Waterways
The main waterway for freight traffic in Belgium is the Albert canal, which starts at the port of Antwerp and runs through the entire Limburg province.
The Albert canal directly links Limburg to the Port of Antwerp, the second largest port in Europe and seventh on a global ranking. The Albert canal can accommodate ships measuring 134 metres in length and 12.5 metres in width. It allows for push towing convoys of up to 200 metres long and 23 metres wide.
More than 40 million tonnes of goods are shipped through the Albert Canal each year. The waterway is a true asset in Limburg’s expansion as a logistics gateway to Europe.
Some 150 hectares of logistics business parks are currently being developed on the banks of the Albert Canal, and the further expansion of the Meerhout terminal alongside the Nike distribution centre represents a unique advantage in the process.
Air traffic
The main international airports within reach of Limburg are Brussels Airport, Düsseldorf Airport, Charles de Gaulle, Paris and London Heathrow.
Close-by regional airports include Maastricht, Liege-Bierset, Charleroi, Eindhoven, Antwerp and Cologne.
