Eneco, the Dutch energy company, is going to build two power plants along the Albert Canal in Beringen. It has obtained the necessary permit from the Government and aims at starting construction works within the next 12 months. The plants should be operational by 2016.
These “STEG” plants convert natural gas into electricity by means of a combined gas and steam turbine. Each plant will have a capacity of 465 MWe and the two together will cover 6% of Belgium’s total electricity production.

The investment involves an amount of EUR 800 million and will provide work to approximately 40 people. The Dutch energy company Eneco has been active in Belgium since 2003, first as a supplier for mainly large companies and government institutions, but later also for SMEs and since last month, for private individuals.
