Limburg-based KRC Genk into the group stage of the Champions League on penalty kicks
Following the 2-1 defeat in Israel, a single goal at home against Maccabi Haifa would have been enough for Genk to reach the group stage of the Champions League. That important goal was quickly scored by Jelle Vossen. However, an Israeli equaliser followed shortly afterwards. Nevertheless, Buffel ensured a 2-1 lead before the half-time whistle.
Following the break, the tension in the Cristal Arena could be cut with a knife. And both in the second half and in extra time, no goals were scored, meaning qualification had to be decided by penalties. Genk goalkeeper Köteles saved two penalties, while the Limburg team scored four penalties.
The Limburg team can now prepare for the group stage of the Champions League, the draw for which will take place on Thursday, August 25 in Monaco.
